Amanda's Bookshelf

I'm a culture junkie who works at a bookstore. Pop, high-brow, junk -- it's all good. I try and consume it all. I read tons, especially young adult fiction. I also love quirky, offbeat novels; cultural analysis; mythology; girly fiction; fantasy; screwball romantic comedies; books with extremely flawed characters, yet somehow you really empathize with them; nonlinear narratives and language play.

Girls in White Dresses (Vintage Contemporaries)

Girls in White Dresses - Jennifer Close I really enjoyed this. It's told in quite a punctuated style, not really delving into the characters, but revealing what they are like through anecdotes and moments in their lives. I can see how many wouldn't like it as it doesn't really get to the heart of anything, but I liked the way we saw the flaws and insecurities that molded these women, as well as the social pressure and family history that played a part in it all. All of these made me enjoy this book, where as I can see it would put others off.
